Blocking the enemy will automatically hand you the victory. It may be a bit tricky, but as you move your pieces across the board, look for opportunities to create a wall around your opponent’s checkers. Your opponent loses when you capture all of their pieces or if they can no longer make any moves. In Checkers, the player with more kinged pieces on the table is the one most likely to win the match, so it’s best to start early! Set up a blockade Focus on the endgameĪt the start of the game, you should put all your focus on moving as many pieces as you can to the other side of the board to build a team of Kings. Keeping your home row occupied will prevent your opponent from making Kings and gives you an opportunity to jump and capture any opposing pieces that come too close. The back row of checkers on either side is called the “home row.” It’s best to keep this row in reserve until you need the pieces most. It may seem like you’re more vulnerable to attacks from this position, but ultimately, claiming the center will give you more mobility. However, it’s best to advance your pieces toward the center. Rookie players sometimes rely on the sides of the board for safety, since pieces on the sides cannot be jumped. Not to worry though, there are a few key strategies that you can use to win some games. While Checkers is not quite as popular as a game like Chess, there is still a lot of strategy involved. You win by removing all of your opponent's pieces from the board, or if your opponent can't make a move. They can even combine jumps forward and backward on the same turn! Kings can move and jump diagonally in any direction. If one of your pieces gets to the opposite side of the board (your opponent's back row), it will turn into a King. If after jumping, your piece could make another jump, it is allowed to make additional jumps. To capture an opponent's piece and remove it from the board, you need to "jump" over their piece with one of yours. Your pieces can only move forward one tile diagonally (they always stay on the brown tiles). Avoid mowing when your soil or grass is wet as this can also cause damage to your lawn.' What are the best plants for a front garden? It’s best to only remove one third of a grass's length when mowing, and to ensure a clean cut it’s best if your mower has sharp blades as otherwise you could potentially pull up parts of your lawn. Mowing: 'Typical mowing season in the UK is between February and October however with warmer winters in recent years we have also seen grass growth during this time. Aeration is performed by creating small holes in the soil and can be done using a garden fork but usually works better with specially made tools.' 'Aeration can improve the flow of water and air and reduce surface buildup, you can also change the nature of your coil with organic materials to get the desired drainage levels. The most common causes for water build up is the absorbability of your lawn’s soil or the landscaping.' By feeding your lawn twice a year you will provide your lawn with the nutrients that it needs to fight off diseases and keep your lawn looking green.'ĭrainage: 'If your front lawn has poor drainage there is a risk that it may become waterlogged for hours and in some cases even days and if this isn’t improved it can lead to other complications for your lawn’s health. Give your grass a boost in spring and again in autumn and you will have a strong summer lawn and grass that is prepared for winter. How do you take care of a front garden?Īccording to Chris from The Grass People, there are three main areas to keep in mind for caring for a front lawn.įertilisation: 'A good idea is to fertilise twice a year. Another great way to ensure your plot is low maintenance is by carefully selecting plants that are hardy and require little to no effort to stay green and thriving all year round – border shrubs such as Leylandii and potted bay trees, which can withstand the low winter temperatures surprisingly well. This mix is also hard wearing, drought tolerant and can grow well in low nutrient conditions.'įor the most low-maintenance approach, opt for a gravel or paved frontage instead. The seeds are expertly blended and are made up of 100% fine fescues which is particularly good for lawns that are shaded. 'Ideal for those of us who are looking for a low-maintenance lawn. 'There are low upkeep and slow growing seed mixes which requires much less mowing than most grass seed types,' continues Chris. 'However, maintaining a front garden doesn’t have to be time consuming with many ways you can keep it low-maintenance.' 'Your front lawn says a lot about your home, it’s the first thing visitors will see and these impressions last, especially in boosting the kerb appeal of your property,' says Chris Mcllroy, lawn expert at The Grass People. Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley has been somewhat more forthcoming, but her agenda still includes huge gaps. While Ron DeSantis had an aggressive tax cutting agenda as governor of Florida, he has been almost silent on what he’d do on fiscal policy as president. You can’t say that about his former GOP opponents. And while Scott left out some key details (on international tax, for example), you knew where he stood on revenue issues. Nearly every bullet point was accompanied by a reference to an actual bill in Congress. But that idea is unsupported by evidence and has been rejected by nearly all economists.ĭespite those shortcomings, his tax plan was specific enough that independent analysts (and voters) could make informed judgments about its virtues and flaws. CRFB estimated it would add more than $3 trillion to the national debt over a decade, even with his proposed (and unrealistic) across-the-board cuts in non-defense, non-Social Security, non-Medicare spending.
